Develop Informational Materials NDT Intelligent Construction Technologies for Asphalt Pavement during Construction
Status: Active (FHWA HIF230086PR: 09/22/2023 to 03/22/2025)
Summary
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Intelligent Construction Technologies (ICT) have rapidly evolved over the past few decades, with significant acceleration noted in the last ten years. As these technologies mature, they have increasingly contributed to improved construction quality assurance (QA). However, despite the clear benefits, many state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) and industries have been slow to incorporate these NDT ICTs into their routine practices, particularly in their construction specifications. The following figure shows the typical stages of new technology adoption related to NDT ICTs.
This project aims to address the challenges of the final two stages: “technology transfer and training” and “data validation and management.” Specifically, the primary project objective is to develop and deliver PowerPoint informational material on NDT ICTs for asphalt pavement during construction. These materials will aid in educating agencies and contractors about ICTs currently available, including the capabilities, applications, advantages and limitations, and potential strategies for incorporating these technologies to enhance QA while meeting the requirements of 23 CFR 637 Subpart B (CFR) “Quality Assurance Procedures for Construction.”
The objective of this FHWA project is to develop informational materials NDT Intelligent Construction Technologies for asphalt pavement during construction.
